What is Thai massage?

Thai massage, or Nuad boran as it is known in Thailand, is a unique and powerful therapy form incorporating and blending elements of Acupressure, Yoga, Physiotherapy, Energy healing, Ayurveda and Osteopathic methods. Thai massage is a form of bodywork which has to be experienced.

History

Thai massage has its roots in the Indian systems of Yoga and Ayurveda which has been around for over 4000 years. It is believed to have been developed by the legendary founder of Thai massage Jivaka Kumar Baccha. The Thai people still honor him as "The father of medicine". Thai massage has been handed down through generations ever since it was introduced to Thailand from India around 2000 years ago.

What to expect?

Thai massage is performed on a large futon/mat with the patient dressed in loose clothing. A typical session lasts between 1-2 hours, although longer sessions are catered for upon request.

The practitioner uses thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet to apply a combination of acupressure, gentle rocking and twisting, joint manipulations/mobilizations and assisted yoga stretches. The therapist uses bodyweight instead of strength to create a powerful and effective massage.
